POV you have arrived in London and you are starting to get your head around the public transport system. The London underground and buses operate very efficiently thanks to Transport for London (TfL). The city is very well connected and you can get anywhere you want with relative ease. Did you know London has the oldest underground system in the world? In this blog, we’re going to explain how you can cut costs on your travel and benefit from an 18+ Student Oyster card.

What is an Oyster card?

An Oyster card is used for public transport in London. It is a smart card which holds pay-as-you-go credit for your travel. You can load up your oyster card (topping up) at any tube station across the city. The Oyster card can be used on buses, trams, tubes, London overground, even river services! Now, as a student living and studying in London, you are entitled to 30% discounts on your rail and bus travel. Let’s break down how it works.

How do I apply?

To apply for your student Oyster card, you must have an active email address, a student number/student ID, a London borough address and a digital photo. You will be required to pay a £20 admin fee but this will be money saved back in no time. Make sure on the application you select ‘University Course’ rather than ‘Work Placement’ even if you are doing an internship.
